Roots of Tomorrow creates initiatives where positive environmental outcomes also generate meaningful social impact.
Environmental and social sustainability are often treated as separate challenges. We believe the strongest ideas can address both at the same time.
That is the idea behind Roots of Tomorrow: practical, community-based initiatives that reduce environmental harm while creating direct benefits for people. We focus on projects that are simple enough to participate in, meaningful enough to matter, and designed to grow beyond a single event.
The seeds we plant today will become the Roots of Tomorrow.
Our clothing drive showed what our model looks like in practice: keeping usable clothing out of landfill while supporting people in our community.
In partnership with Auckland Libraries, we organised clothing collection points across East Auckland and collected more than 1,000 pieces of clothing. Donated clothing was redirected away from landfill and into the hands of organisations that could create genuine social value from it.
Extending the useful life of clothing helps reduce textile waste and unnecessary consumption.
Quality clothing was passed to Women’s Refuge and Dress for Success to support people in our communities.
Our next projects focus on building practical knowledge and giving young people the support to turn their own sustainability ideas into action.
Community recycling classes around Auckland designed to make local recycling rules easier to understand and help people make better everyday decisions.
An idea competition where students respond to a specific sustainability challenge, then receive support to develop and implement their strongest ideas within their own communities.
Founded from a simple observation: social and environmental sustainability should not have to compete for attention.
I founded Roots of Tomorrow in 2023 after noticing that the intersection between social and environmental sustainability felt under-developed.
I am an 18-year-old law and commerce student, and I wanted to create something practical that could address both. Since then, Roots of Tomorrow has organised city-wide clothing drives, partnered with Auckland Libraries, and helped redirect donated clothing to Women’s Refuge and Dress for Success.
Now, the focus is on building the next generation of projects — from recycling education to helping other young people turn their own ideas into community action.
